Polperro

Thursday 1st July

Today was the highly recommended trip to Polperro in Corwall. Thank you Margaret and Patrick!!! We had an absolutely fabulous day. Kay - if you're reading this nip 'round to Margaret and Pat's place and settle the argument - the horsedrawn carriage is on wheels, not rails. :-)

You can't drive down into the village unless you live there or your accommodation has a permit for parking with it, but there are places down nearer to the harbour and beach where you'd be lucky to get a bicycle, let alone a car!

This waterwheel was one of the first things we saw from the carriage on the way down - I keep getting carried away with the "charm" of it all, but I'm sick of that word.

Bev, if you're feeling better, or Cate S if you're watching can you Please, Please, Please send me some words that are alternatives to Charming and Quaint. Next time I travel I'm taking a pocket thesaurus!!

I think this cave might be a smugglers cave, or maybe it's where the pirate that Poppy Ray met the other day was keeping his treasure?

I felt like I was on the set of 'Doc Martin' for most of the day. Narrow lanes, bordered by white painted cottages, with low doors and flower boxes on the window sills................. and views of yet more white cottages dotted up the cliff sides.
Everywhere is "dog-friendly" as well and the company that does boat rides around the harbour has a sign that says "nice dogs and happy babies go free".

Ray fulfilled another food goal by having a Cornish Pastie in Cornwall. I think we've missed the Devonshire Tea in Devon, but we had one yesterday in Cornwall, so that will have to do!

Although it was overcast all day, it didn't actually start to rain until we were headed back up the hill to the car park.
I know there is a market for kangaroo scrotums that are made into little coin pouches and sold to tourists in Australia, but who know there was a market in Roo Poo - go figure - or as Jai would say - What the ???????. We actually have no idea what this label is - from outside the shop it would appear to be a clothing label, but we didn't go in to check.

We finished the day by heading into Plymouth - not for sightseeing as although the whole Mayflower and Francis Drake thing may have been interesting, for us being the American connection it would have been less so than other things. No - our trip into Plymouth was for a boring domestic interruption to our holiday - we need to do our washing. The laundrette in the village nearby to our accommodation recently had a fire, so we figured we'd gove Plymouth a go......... More than a slight error in judgement!!
Somewhere along the way - actually more than once - I got a taste of one of those bloody humungous roundabouts with a thousand lanes and two thousand other cars.............. suffice to say these will be avoided at all costs in future. Still the clothes are clean!!!

  5. Hi Narelle & Ray sounds as if you are having a wonderful time. We love the Blog. You put me (jen) to shame with your technological expertise. Like brother like sister! Don't you 2 need sleep!!By 11pm after 12hr days Terry & I would definitely be in bed. We already have millions of photos of Cathedrals from our Europe trip but thanks for yours. Hate to think what it would be like if we went to England! Glad you are enjoying the history, still think I prefer landscapes & architecture. Didn't think you were shopping! Travel books are great for pics and info. I have quite a collection from all our travels. Stay safe and continue to enjoy. Love Jen & Terry

  6. Hey Jen and Terry,

I prefer the scenery and architecture too - the cathederals are part of the architechture though, and there is plenty of scenery yet to come.

After our three nights in Wales we have internet access now (obviously) and I should get the blog up to date again in the next two days.

Re sleep: surely you recall never seeing me in the mornings when I stay at your place? 5.30am is a sleep in and winding down can take me hours.......... so sleep is not something I ever get a lot of!

Re: technology - I'm nothing like up to Terry's standard, but I may have figured out how to get better photos onto the blog. Stayed tuned - I'm not sure yet.

    Cheers,

    N
