The Irish Sea, Tullamore and Kilbeggan Races

Friday 16th July 2010
We waved goodbye to Billinge at about 5am and headed west to Holyhead to cross to Ireland.

The ferry was huge and luxurious. It reminded me of a large and new RSL or something similar. Everything you could need was on board. Food, bar, WI-FI, gaming room.....

We ordered a full English breakfast and half-way through they announced that we would be late as we were heading into some stormy weather. Hence the blog you would have seen previously saying that if you never heard from us again we were at the bottom of the Irish Sea!
Luckily the weather settle and the effects of Ray's last night in Billinge did not rouble him!

This is our first sighting of Ireland from the ferry.
After arriving at our hotel in Portlaoise (that's port leash if you have the right accent), we decided that rather than waste what was left of the afternoon we would go to Tullamore, about 40 minutes drive away.
Tullamore Dew and their liqueur (I forgot what it is called)............ Mmmm!!

On the ferry on the way over to ireland, Ray had commented that he wouldn't mind seeing some Irish racing. As we drove intom Tullamore - lo and behold! - a sign advertising a race meeting that night! In an effort to find out where and what time the races were Ray went into the County Newspaper office - The Offaly Express. We ended up with two free tickets!! How nice was that?!

The races were close by in Kilbeggan, it was quite a big deal for Kilbeggan, a yearly race meeting and the night that we were there was ladies day. I must say I ws a little underdressed! I don't think I'd have won the "Best Dressed Lady" competition in my jeans, t-shirt and denim jacket - but in another way I WAS best dressed becasue it was a little cold! We enjoyed the evening as it was steeplechase and jumping races, which I have never been to before and which Ray enjoys a great deal. We put some money on an Australian horse but don't ask us about our wagers!!
