Enniskillen and surrounds

Monday 19th July 2010

As we prepared to leave Portaiose - which we were told by our pub friend in Tullamore is only a place to visit for two reasons. Whenever someone says they are going to Portlaoise, they are asked "who are you going to visit?". This is because it has a prison and a mental health hospital and, according to the locals in nearby Tullamore, not much else.

Anyway as we went to the car to leave see the picture below of what was parked in the car park. go figure............. We drove north to Northern Ireland and passed Lough Owel along the way.
Enniskellen is an island in Ireland! We went to the tourist information centre and the young lass there was very pleasant and extremely helpful. We decide to take a 2hr 45min cruise around
Lough Erne that surrounds Enniskillen.
While we waited for the boat we observed the swans and their signets on the lough. They are very graceful and regal creatures. Having said that when you see the cygnets you can understand the story about the Ugly Duckling....

Enniskillen has the obligatory castle (we declined to visit this one - just viewed it from the boat on the lough).

The cruise gave us the benefit of some magnificent views................

There was a half hour stop on Devenish Island, the site of an old monastery. There were great views from here as well.

I really have seen enough ruins, but the detail on this Celtic cross and some of the other details in the ruins was fabulous.........

......and we found a Gallagher (my maiden name) headstone.........

We headed to the pub for dinner and then back to our B&B for a good nights sleep.
